PURAC has successfully implemented many cases in the field of sewage sludge anaerobic digestion. In 2012, we designed and constructed the sludge digestion project of Pantai 320,000 tons/day sewage treatment plant in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is a representative of the sludge treatment project along the Belt and Road.  In 2015, we undertook the design and construction of five sludge disposal centers in Beijing Gaobeidian, Xiaohongmen, Qinghe, Huaifang and Gaoantun, which adopted the advanced anaerobic treatment process of THP + anaerobic digestion to treat 6,128 tons of sludge per day (with 20% of solid content).

Compared with the conventional anaerobic digestion process, the advanced anaerobic treatment process can make sludge decomposition more thorough and efficient, so that to realize the reduction, harmless and resource utilization target of sludge treatment and disposal. After these five projects put into operation, they have been in continuous and stable operation, which has played a benchmark and demonstration role in promoting the sludge anaerobic digestion treatment route throughout the country.

Xi’an 1000 tons/day sludge anaerobic treatment project which signed in 2019 was also successfully put into operation, and the Ulaanbaatar 250,000 tons sewage treatment plant sludge treatment project was successfully signed in 2020, so that our total sludge treatment scale is more than 8690 tons/day, becoming the leader in the sludge anaerobic field in China.

These five sludge treatment centers built in Beijing, uses advanced anaerobic technology, with a total capacity of 6,128 tons/day. PURAC is responsible for process package design, consultation, system integration, commissioning, trial operation and other work.

The successful operation of the Beijing Sludge Project has created a new idea for sludge resourceful treatment. Through THP and anaerobic digestion, 60% of the sludge can be reduced, and the daily biogas production can reach 300,000 Nm3, equivalent to 212 tons of standard coal, so the emission reduction effect is significant. The treated sludge can be used for landscaping and land restoration to realize the sludge resource utilization.

PURAC has been consecutively awarded as the leader of municipal sludge anaerobic treatment solution in water industry by an accredited third party since year 2014.
